Overstretching or tearing one or more muscles at the back of the thigh.
A hamstring strain is an injury to one or more of the three muscles at the back of the thigh: the biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus. It happens when a muscle is stretched beyond its limit or exposed to a sudden, powerful force.
These strains are common in sports involving sprinting, jumping, or quick stops and starts, including soccer, basketball, football, tennis, and track. The injury may be mild, moderate, or a severe complete tear.
Diagnosis begins with a review of how the injury happened and a physical examination of tenderness, swelling, strength, and range of motion. Pain may be tested while bending the knee against resistance. X-rays can rule out bone injury, while ultrasound or MRI can show the location and grade of a muscle tear.

A quadriceps strain is a tear in one of the four muscles at the front of the thigh: rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, or vastus intermedius. These muscles work together to straighten the knee and provide power for running, jumping, and kicking.
A strain may happen when the muscle is overstretched or contracts suddenly under force. Like hamstring injuries, quadriceps strains range from a mild grade 1 injury to a severe grade 3 tear.
Diagnosis includes a discussion of how the injury occurred and an examination of the painful area, strength, and range of motion. The clinician may feel for a gap in the muscle when a complete tear is suspected. X-rays can rule out bone or hip problems, while ultrasound or MRI can show muscle damage.
